About Brunswick
It’s nearly impossible to talk about bowling and bowling equipment without mentioning the name Brunswick.
Founded by John Moses Brunswick, the company is the oldest and largest manufacturer of recreation and leisure-time products in the United States, including bowling equipment and products, billiard tables, pleasure boats, and outboard motors. The company manufactures Brunswick, DV8, and Radical brand balls.
Brunswick began to manufacture of bowling balls, bowling pins, and wooden lanes as interest in recreational bowling grew during the 1880s.
By 1906, the company had opened a large manufacturing plant in Muskegon, Michigan, which eventually grew to over one million square feet in the 1940s and became the cornerstone of Brunswick’s manufacturing, producing such products as their revolutionary Mineralite (hard rubber) bowling balls. (Rubber was the material of choice for bowling balls for approximately 50 years, until the advent of polyester.)
Before being acquired by Bowlmor AMF (now known as Bowlero Corporation) in October 2014, the Brunswick bowling center division was the second largest operator of bowling centers in the United States.
Bowlers who were around in the 1990’s and early 2000’s will appreciate Brunswick’s innovations. For example, remember Quantum? It was known for its attention to detail and for the best performance in bowling.
Quantum has been redesigned for today’s lane conditions with a new Quantum Mushroom High RG Asymmetric core shape, a replica of the original Quantum core, as well as a reactive coverstock that offers improved durability, performance longevity, and incredible hitting power.
Coverstock Options & How They Perform
Whether the Brunswick Quantum interest you or you’re waiting until the newest releases are announced, it may be a good time to think about how coverstocks could help your game. The primary coverstocks used today are plastic, urethane and reactive resin.
Polyester/Plastic: Polyester, also known as plastic, is commonly used for beginner balls and spare balls. It is designed to create little friction between ball and lane. Consequently, the ball is less likely to hook off course when you’re trying to pick up spares.
Urethane: This material is used for beginner to intermediate balls. The ball will react relatively early when rolling it down lane, is easier to angle, and has higher hook potential than a polyester ball. Urethane balls are popular for specialty and opening rolls because of their versatility and durability.
Reactive Resin: This material creates an immense amount of friction, making them ideal for complicated spins and hook shots. The downside is that they are more susceptible to lane imperfections and may go off course even if you rolled it well. Reactive resin balls are best handled by skilled bowlers.
The bottom line is that it can be ideal to have a mixture of each coverstock to match up to the bowling conditions. Instead of always buying the newest high-performance ball every time one comes out, consider rounding out your arsenal to help improve your scores.
