Holding a Bowling Ball
Most bowling balls have three holes; two are side-by-side and one, usually the largest, is located below them.
While supporting the weight of the ball in your non-bowling hand, carefully put your middle finger and your ring finger in the side-by-side holes and your thumb in the other.
Make sure your fingers are inserted as deeply as the holes permit (typically down to the second knuckle joint on each finger). The ball should feel secure in your hand. This conventional grip will give you the most control.
If you prefer a fingertip grip, insert your fingers down to the first knuckle joint. The weight of the ball will be supported by the tips of your fingers.
Why Buy Your Own Bowling Ball?
Unlike most sports, bowling doesn’t require you to buy your own equipment. You can visit your local bowling alley, rent a pair of shoes, grab a house ball, and bowl. But there are several good reasons you should consider buying your own bowling ball, especially if you are serious about improving your game.
Greater Consistency
It’s hard to bowl consistently when you’re using house balls that don’t properly fit to your hand. A ball that’s drilled to your own hand measurements will give you more control and help you throw more accurate shots. This will help improve your game and increase your scores.
Less Risk of Injury
Using a ball that fits poorly can cause wrist, elbow, shoulder, and other injuries. When your ball properly fits your hand, you won’t have to force your shots and this will drastically reduce your risk of injury.
Convenience
Instead of wasting time looking for a decent house ball, having your own ball means you’ll be able to bowl as soon as you get to the alley. This will give you the most enjoyment from your time on the lanes.
Avoid Germs
There are hundreds of people who use the balls at the bowling alley, and they don’t get washed very often (if ever). When you buy your own ball, you won’t have to worry about where it’s been, who has used it, or what germs they may have left behind.
