Bowling Ball FAQs
Q. What type of bowling ball is best for a new bowler?
A. If you’re new to the sport, or know someone who is, the best option is usually a ball with a polyester (a.k.a. plastic) coverstock. These balls won’t break the bank. They have less friction on the lane and are designed to travel true and straight, so they can help you improve your skills. Polyester balls are available in a wide range of weights, so it’s easy to find lighter balls for new bowlers of any age.
Q. What is the best weight for a bowling ball?
A, Bowling balls weigh from 6 to 16 pounds. Lighter balls are generally designed for kids, and the heaviest are the maximum weight allowed in professional bowling. In general, take the bowler’s age into consideration when choosing the right weight for a bowling ball.
- Child: 6 to 10 pounds
- Teenager: 11 to 14 pounds
- Adult Female: 12 to 14 pounds
- Senior: 12 to 14 pounds
- Adult Male: 15 to 16 pounds
Q. What type of ball do I need for the best hook shot?
A. A reactive resin ball, such as a Radical bowling ball, will be your best bet. The resin offers more friction between the ball and the oil on the lane, so the ball curves into the pins more easily. If you’re just perfecting your hook, however, urethane is a good option because it’s less expensive and will give you a little more control.
Q. What type of cleaning or maintenance does a bowling ball require?
A. Taking care of your bowling ball will prolong its life and prevent it from losing its hook potential. Because coverstocks are porous, your bowling ball will absorb some oil every time it goes down the lane. The oil and dirt causes the ball’s performance to decline over time. At the very least, towel the oil off the ball regularly with a microfiber towel to ensure consistent ball motion.
