In general, all bowling balls have the ability to spin on their axis when you release them. If your objective is to knock down some scattered pins, however, a ball with a reactive resin or urethane coverstock will be your best option.
The resin offers more friction between the ball and the oil on the lane, so the ball will curve into the pins more easily. If you’re just perfecting your spin, however, urethane will be a good option because it’s less expensive and will give you more control.
We recommend the mid-performance and high-performance balls from Ebonite, 900 Global, Columbia 300, Brunswick, Radical, Roto Grip, Storm, and many of our other brands.
Tips for an Effective Spin
- Take a look at the pocket between the pins that you’ll be targeting.
- Now, grip the ball with your fingers. The style of grip you use can determine the intensity of the ball’s spin. If you are learning to spin or hook the ball, you may want to consider a fingertip grip.
- Make sure your thumb is the first finger out of the ball, but keep the other fingers in the ball. The spin will come from your fingers as they release the ball and not from your wrist. Removing the thumb first lets the ball roll off your hand and gives it the torque it needs for spin.
- Slowly lift your fingers, making sure the ball does not get stuck on your fingers. Rotate your hand just slightly from the wrist at the moment of release. A small rotation (counterclockwise for right-handed bowlers and clockwise for left-handed bowlers) will help add spin.
- Follow through with your delivery. Continue to move your arm upward and forward toward the pocket as you release the ball.
